Li-Gang Liu

Li-Gang Liu was a visiting fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics. Named as "Economist of the Year" in 2012 by China Business News, Liu is chief economist for greater China at the Australia and New Zealand Banking Group (ANZ) in Hong Kong, and focusses on macroeconomics, foreign exchange, capital markets, and strategy research. Previously he was senior manager at the Research Department of the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, senior fellow at the Asian Development Bank Institute in Tokyo, economist in the Office of Chief Economist for the East Asian and Pacific Region at the World Bank Group, and research associate at PIIE.

Liu’s recent academic publications include "Do Foreign Political Pressures Affect the Renminbi Exchange Rate? An Event Study," Journal of International Money and Finance, (2012), and "Honor Thy Creditors Before Thy Shareholders: Are the Profits of Chinese State-Owned Enterprises Real?" Asian Economic Papers, MIT Press (2010). He was also a coauthor of The Global Economic Effect of Asian Currency Devaluations (Peterson Institute for International Economics, 1998). He has published many other scholarly articles in refereed journals, including the Journal of Banking and Finance, European Journal of Finance, Journal of World Trade, China Economic Review, China and World Economy, and the Journal of Policy Reform.

His views on China’s economy and economic policy have been cited widely by the international and Chinese media. He is also an invited columnist for FTChinese.com and contributes regularly to Caijing and the Shanghai Securities Journal.

Liu obtained his BA in economics with high honors from the University of Maryland, College Park, and holds a PhD in economics from Johns Hopkins University.
