The Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs sponsors an annual international affairs essay competition for high school and college students. This year the contest attracted 173 entries from 38 countries. Winners receive Amazon gift certificates and a copy of Ethics & International Affairs: A Reader.

This year the question to be addressed was "What would you like to see happen during this century to make the world a better place?" The joint winners in the high school division were Eunice Yoona Lee (at left above), age 17, of the Hankuk Academy of Foreign Studies, South Korea for her essay Why Korean Unification Is Not a Selfish Wish, and Angela Yoon (at right above), age 16, from the Seoul International School, South Korea for her essay Imagining a Better Future: Trust in Our Protectors. Miss Lee indicates that “My dream is to become a writer who is always alert to social ills and speaks up for those in need of help. As I was born in New York and came to Korea at the age of seven, one of my goals is to merge the experiences I had in my two mother countries and promote cultural connection through the written word.” Miss Yoon has published short stories and won writing contests on both a local and international level. When she has the time, she likes to immerse herself in a good book, write stories, and look for good music.

To reiterate: this was a global competition. The lesson I take from this is “don’t mess with young women from elite Seoul high schools.”
