Monica de Bolle assesses the rise in economic nationalism abetted by the COVID-19 pandemic at a virtual event held by PIIE and the Center for Economic Policy Research (CEPR). She argues that advanced and emerging-market economies are exploiting the contagion to pursue protectionist policies that reject multilateral institutions and favor national interests over foreign interests. When the crisis recedes, she suggests, governments will have to come together to rebuild international cooperation and prosperity.
