Washington, DC—The Peterson Institute for International Economics (PIIE) announced today that former central banker Klaas Knot has joined the Institute as a distinguished visiting fellow, bringing deep expertise from the highest levels of international economic and financial governance.
Knot served as president of De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB) from July 2011 to July 2025, establishing himself as one of Europe's leading voices on monetary and financial policy. He also served as chair of the Financial Stability Board (FSB) from December 2021 to July 2025.
Knot served as a member of the Governing Council and General Council of the European Central Bank, the European Systemic Risk Board, the International Monetary Fund's Board of Governors, and the Board of Directors of the Bank for International Settlements.
PIIE president Adam S. Posen said, "We are honored to welcome Klaas Knot to the Institute. At a time when international cooperation is essential to maintaining financial resilience, Klaas's unique perspective as a leading policymaker and regulator will significantly sharpen our analysis of the challenges facing the global economy."
Knot said, "I feel honored and privileged to join the Peterson Institute at a time in which I believe confronting global challenges with global cooperation and global solutions is more important than ever."
Before leading DNB, Knot served as deputy treasurer-general and director of financial markets at the Dutch Ministry of Finance (2009–11) and held a variety of positions at DNB from 1995 to 2009, interspersed with roles at the International Monetary Fund (1998–99) and the Dutch Pensions and Insurance Supervisory Authority (2003–04).
Knot currently leads KK Economic Advisory, his own strategic consultancy advising European and Dutch public authorities on crisis management, central bank independence, and public infrastructure finance.
Knot graduated with honors in economics from the University of Groningen in 1991 and earned his doctorate in economics there in 1995. In 2025, he was appointed Grand Officer of the Order of Orange-Nassau in recognition of his distinguished public service.
