Klaas Knot
Klaas Knot joined the Peterson Institute for International Economics as a distinguished visiting fellow in April 2026. Knot was president of De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB) from July 2011 to July 2025 and served as chair of the Financial Stability Board from December 2021 to July 2025. He was also a member of the European Central Bank's Governing Council and General Council, the European Systemic Risk Board, the International Monetary Fund's Board of Governors, and the Board of Directors of the Bank for International Settlements.
Knot currently runs his own strategic consultancy firm, KK Economic Advisory, where he advises European and Dutch public authorities on wide-ranging issues such as crisis management, central bank independence, and financing public infrastructure. He is also a frequent speaker at various national and international conferences and symposia.
Knot holds several secondary positions. He is a member of the Group of Thirty, a global advisory body comprised of economic and financial leaders, and the CFA Institute Systemic Risk Council. He has been an honorary professor of economics of central banking at the University of Groningen since 2005 and an honorary professor of monetary stability at the University of Amsterdam since 2015. He has published a variety of articles in leading Dutch and international journals on monetary and financial economics.
Before assuming DNB's presidency, Knot served as deputy treasurer-general and director of financial markets at the Dutch Ministry of Finance (2009–11). He held various positions at DNB from 1995 to 2009, interspersed with positions at the International Monetary Fund (1998-99) and the former Dutch Pensions and Insurance Supervisory Authority (2003-04).
Knot graduated with honors in economics from the University of Groningen in 1991 and earned his doctorate in economics there in 1995. In 2025, he was appointed Grand Officer of the Order of Orange-Nassau in recognition of his distinguished public service.
