Event Summary

The Peterson Institute for International Economics is pleased to host "Decentering the dollar: A conversation." As the Trump administration pursues major changes to long-standing trade and geopolitical arrangements, this session will examine the sustainability of the dollar's dominance, the prospects for coordinated international responses, and the implications for currencies, government debt, and global financial stability.

Klaas Knot (former governor, De Nederlandsche Bank, and former chair, Financial Stability Board) will open with his perspective on global monetary dynamics, followed by Maurice Obstfeld (PIIE C. Fred Bergsten Senior Fellow) offering his updated analysis of the impact of the Trump administration's policies on the dollar's role in the international monetary system. The discussion will be led by Adam S. Posen (PIIE president), with his political economy perspective on the interaction of geopolitics with the dollar's central currency status.
