Washington, DC—The Peterson Institute for International Economics (PIIE) is pleased to announce that Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas, former economic counsellor and director of the research department at the International Monetary Fund (IMF), has joined PIIE as a nonresident senior fellow, bringing decades of experience in international macroeconomics, global financial stability, and academic research.

Posen, president of the Peterson Institute, said: "Pierre-Olivier's work has shaped how policymakers understand open economy macroeconomics, exchange rates, and the international monetary system. His intellectual leadership steering research and policy advice at the IMF puts him at the frontier of dealing with today's global economic challenges. We are delighted that he is the latest former IMF chief economist to bring his expertise to PIIE."
Gourinchas served as the IMF's economic counsellor and director of the research department from 2022 to 2026, where he oversaw the Fund's flagship World Economic Outlook and led its analytical work on global imbalances, geoeconomic fragmentation, and the international monetary system. Before joining the IMF, he was a member of the Council of Economic Advisors to the Prime Minister of France (2012–13).
Gourinchas has also held senior editorial roles across the profession's leading journals, serving as coeditor of the American Economic Review (2019–22), managing editor of the Journal of International Economics (2017–19), and founding editor-in-chief of the IMF Economic Review (2009–16). He was program director for International Macroeconomics and Finance at the National Bureau of Economic Research (2017–22) and is a distinguished fellow at the London-based Centre for Economic Policy Research.

Gourinchas is currently the S.K. and Angela Chan Professor of Global Management at the Haas School of Business and the department of economics at the University of California, Berkeley, and faculty director of the Clausen Center for International Business and Policy. His research focuses on international finance and macroeconomics, including global imbalances, exchange rates, and the role of the US dollar in the international monetary system. Gourinchas holds a PhD in economics from MIT.
