Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas

Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas, nonresident senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics since September 2026, is the S.K. and Angela Chan Professor of Global Management and director of the Clausen Center for International Business and Policy at the University of California, Berkeley. Previously he was the economic counsellor and director of the research department at the International Monetary Fund (IMF). His main research interests are international macroeconomics and finance.

His recent research focuses on geo-economic fragmentation, global imbalances, the drivers of global inflation, covered and uncovered parity deviations, exchange rate and term premia, the international monetary system and the role of the US dollar.

Gourinchas is the laureate of the 2007 Bernàcer Prize for best European economist working in macroeconomics and finance under the age of 40, and of the 2008 Prix du Meilleur Jeune Economiste for best French economist under the age of 40. He was a member of the French Council of Economic Advisors to the Prime Minister (2012–13). He was the editor-in-chief of the IMF Economic Review (2009–16), managing editor of the Journal of International Economics (2017–19), and coeditor of the American Economic Review (2019–22). He served as director of the NBER's International Finance and Macroeconomics Program (2017–22).

Gourinchas is a fellow of the Econometric Society and a distinguished fellow of the Center for Economic Policy Research.

Gourinchas grew up in France, where he attended Ecole Polytechnique. He received his PhD in economics in 1996 from MIT. He taught at the Stanford Graduate School of Business and Princeton University before joining the economics department at UC Berkeley.
