Pablo Hernández de Cos
Pablo Hernández de Cos joined the Peterson Institute for International Economics in August 2024 as a nonresident senior fellow. He has been the chair of the Advisory Technical Committee of the European Systemic Risk Board since 2019. His research focuses on financial stability and monetary and fiscal policy.
Hernández de Cos was governor of the Bank of Spain and member of the Governing and General Council of the European Central Bank (ECB) from June 2018 to June 2024.
He was also chair of the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision (BCBS) between 2019 and 2024 and a member of the General Board and the Steering Committee of the European Systemic Risk Board (ESRB) and of the Financial Stability Committee (FSB). In addition, he has chaired the Governing Board of the Center for Latin American Monetary Studies (CEMLA).
Previously, he was director of Economics and Statistics and head of the Economic Policy Analysis Division at the Bank of Spain, and advisor to the ECB's executive board. He was a member of the Committee for the Reform of the Spanish Tax System in 2013.
He chaired the Eurosystem's Public Finance Working Group and was a member of the Economic and Financial Committee (EFC) and the Economic Policy Committee (EPC) of the European Union.
He holds a PhD in economics (Complutense University of Madrid), a degree in economics and business studies (CUNEF University), and a degree in law (UNED). He has taught at the University Carlos III of Madrid and Instituto de Empresa, and he's currently a professor of economics at IESE Business school.
