Asia Society Panel on the Alliance and North Korea

Body

In mid-December I participated on a panel at the Asia Society in San Francisco on the theme of "Trump, Moon and the 'Ironclad' Alliance: Responding to North Korea’s Nuclear Ambitions." Introduced by Tom Gold (UC Berkeley) and moderated by Margaret Conley, the panel included Deputy Consul General Jimin Kim from the Korean Consulate General in San Francisco (which generously supported the event); Daniel Russel, former Assistant Secretary of State for East Asia and currently at the Asia Society Policy Institute; Kori Schake, Hoover Institution at Stanford and with lively writing at Foreign Policy (such as this review of President Trump's first year); Sung-Yoon Lee, Kim Koo-Korea Foundation Professor at the Fletcher School. The conversation ranged widely (and can be seen here), covering issues from the alliance to sanctions to the prospects—however dim—of denuclearization.
