The case against nostalgia in economic policymaking

In an interview with Martin Sandbu for the Financial Times, PIIE president Adam S. Posen discussed his recent article in Foreign Affairs in which he decries the US withdrawal from the global economy and policymakers’ fixation on protecting manufacturing jobs. Rather than focusing on protecting “good jobs” in factories—which benefits a small group of predominantly white male workers—Posen argues policymakers should focus on creating “good work” by protecting “individuals and families, not jobs and places.”
