The Peterson Institute for International Economics (PIIE) is pleased to announce that economist Simeon Djankov rejoined the Institute as a senior fellow on April 1, following a three-year leave for public service at the World Bank where he served as director of development economics. At PIIE he will play an important role in the Institute’s work on economic opportunity for women, climate change and economic growth, the regulation of public procurement, and the international financial institutions’ crisis response, as well as on economic developments in Russia and Eastern Europe.
“Simeon Djankov has made a career of uncovering, telling, and implementing the hard truths of what works and what doesn’t for economic growth. He is an advocate for freedom, not just in its economic aspects, and equality of opportunity for all people in all countries,” PIIE president Adam S. Posen said. “We welcome Simeon back to Peterson with excitement—he will lead our expanding work program in cross-national research on the structural determinants of sustainable growth.”
Previously Djankov was deputy prime minister and minister of finance of Bulgaria from 2009 to 2013. In this capacity, he represented his country at the Ecofin meetings of finance ministers in Brussels during the European financial crisis. He also served as chairman of the board of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development in 2012–13. Prior to his cabinet appointment, Djankov was chief economist of the finance and private sector vice presidency of the World Bank where he led work on regulatory reforms around the world. He is the founder of the World Bank's renowned and globally watched Doing Business project.
Djankov also is director of the Financial Markets Group at the London School of Economics. Previously he was rector of the New Economic School in Russia and a visiting lecturer at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government. He was associate editor of the Journal of Comparative Economics from 2004 to 2009. A widely cited researcher, Djankov is the author of Inside the Euro Crisis: An Eyewitness Account (2014). He obtained his doctorate in economics in 1997 from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor.
