Peterson Institute named best economic and financial affairs think tank for fifth year in a row

The Peterson Institute for International Economics is pleased to announce that it is the recipient of the 2020 Prospect Award for Best Think Tank in the category of Economic and Financial Affairs. This is the fifth year in a row that the Peterson Institute has won the award, which the BBC has dubbed "the Oscars of the think tank world."

At the award presentation today, Prospect Magazine editor Tom Clark said that though the Peterson Institute has won the past four years and Prospect thought that perhaps the honor would go to another think tank this year, the Peterson Institute and its research submissions "were just too good. They are back as the top economic think tank in the world." He also noted that one of the judges described the Institute's research on how to stabilize the global economy when the next recession would inevitably hit as "authoritatively important in so many debates."

This year, PIIE was judged not only against North American and other non-EU think tanks as it was in the past, but also ones in the United Kingdom and European Union. "The honor is more superlative than usual due to Prospect merging the previous regional categories into one, creating more and stiffer competition," Clark said.

In judging the entries, the Prospect jury took into account not only the research itself, but also its specific impact and influence on policymaking. They awarded PIIE this year for its pre-pandemic research on how to stabilize the global economy when the next recession hits, and how the body of work proved to be prescient, laying the groundwork for the major economies' macroeconomic policy responses to the COVID-19 pandemic.
