Washington—The Peterson Institute for International Economics is pleased to announce that Karen Dynan will be joining the Institute as a nonresident senior fellow beginning March 2017. Most recently, Dynan served as assistant secretary for economic policy and chief economist at the US Department of the Treasury.
“We are thrilled to have Karen Dynan join the Institute. Economists with her senior policy experience are rare,” said Adam S. Posen, PIIE president. “Karen’s distinguished career in public service at the Federal Reserve and at Treasury has contributed behind the scenes to many successful US policies. Her leadership and analytical advice were instrumental in repairing the US economy after the financial crisis. At PIIE, she will continue working in her areas of globally recognized expertise, including consumer behavior, tax and fiscal policy, and economic forecasting. She will contribute significantly to the Institute’s already influential forecasting efforts, as well as to our understanding of the US economy in a time of great change.”
During her tenure at the Treasury Department, Dynan was responsible for leading the team in charge of analyzing US economic developments and for advising the secretary and the Treasury in the determination of appropriate economic policies. Before her nomination as assistant treasury secretary, Dynan was the vice president and codirector of the economic studies program at the Brookings Institution. Prior to joining Brookings, she served on the staff of the Federal Reserve Board for 17 years, most recently as a senior advisor. While at the Fed, Dynan led research on macroeconomic developments, household and real estate financial conditions, and the policy response to the financial crisis. She also served as a senior economist at the White House Council of Economic Advisers during 2003–04.
“I am delighted to be joining the Peterson Institute,” said Dynan. “Analysts and policymakers around the world look to the Peterson Institute to provide timely first-rate research on pressing economic issues. I look forward to working with my new colleagues in their efforts to understand and improve public policy.”
Dynan received her PhD in economics from Harvard University and her AB in applied mathematics and economics from Brown University.
