Washington, DC—The Peterson Institute for International Economics (PIIE) announced that trade expert Inu Manak has joined PIIE as a senior fellow, bringing extensive expertise in US trade policy and global trade institutions.
Manak had previously served as senior fellow for international trade at the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) since 2022. Her research focuses on trade institutions, economic history, and American political thought, with particular attention to presidential tariff authority, trade agreements, industrial policy, and the political economy of open markets.
"Inu is one of the leading voices working on US trade policy today. At a moment when so much is uncertain between the law and politics, and between US and allies, her command of trade law, institutions, and political economy will be an enormous asset to the Peterson Institute," PIIE president Adam S. Posen said.
Before joining CFR, Manak was a research fellow at the Herbert A. Stiefel Center for Trade Policy Studies at the Cato Institute, where she spent more than four years producing policy studies, congressional filings, and public commentary on US trade law and international trade institutions.
"PIIE is the premier venue for research and discussion of international economic policy. I am excited to work alongside a leading group of experts committed to advancing global prosperity and developing practical policy solutions to contemporary economic challenges," Manak said.
Manak's published scholarship spans peer-reviewed journals and major media outlets including The Wall Street Journal, the Financial Times, and Foreign Policy. Her work has examined legal abuses of Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962 and Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974, World Trade Organization reform, labor enforcement under the United States-Mexio-Canada Agreement, and the intersection of industrial policy and trade law. She has also written extensively on US-India and US-Canada trade relations.
Manak holds a PhD in government from Georgetown University, where her dissertation examined dispute avoidance in WTO committees, and an MA in international affairs from American University.
