Economist Anton Korinek, leading AI expert, joins PIIE

WASHINGTON—The Peterson Institute for International Economics (PIIE) is pleased to announce that economist Anton Korinek has joined the Institute as a nonresident senior fellow.

Korinek's research analyzes how advances in artificial intelligence (AI) affect the economy and society, investigating AI's implications for economic growth, labor markets, inequality, and market concentration. He focuses on how to steer progress in AI toward shared prosperity and how to prepare society for its transformative potential.

"Anton's research agenda is motivated by a sense of urgency to make sense of AI's economic impact and how best to channel it," PIIE president Adam S. Posen remarked. "He has the outstanding combination of analytical insight and policy relevance to benefit society with the insights he produces. Peterson is fortunate to have Anton join our team and thereby turbocharge our growing group of fellows tackling this critical issue."

Korinek is a professor of economics at the University of Virginia and serves as faculty director of its Economics of Transformative AI (EconTAI) Initiative. He was named to TIME's 2025 TIME100 AI list of the most influential people in artificial intelligence and was a member of a G7 High-Level Panel of Experts on AI. He is a research fellow and leader of the AI Research Network at the Centre for Economic Policy Research. He edited the Oxford Handbook of AI Governance and teaches "The Economics of AI" on Coursera.

Korinek also is a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research and a fellow at the Stanford Digital Economy Lab.

"I am honored to join a community of scholars whose work has shaped international economic policy for decades," Korinek said. "We are at an inflection point where AI could reshape the foundations of the global economy: labor markets, productivity, income distribution, and taxation, and PIIE's commitment to rigorous, nonpartisan analysis makes it the ideal home for this work at such a critical time."

Korinek received his PhD in economics from Columbia University in 2007. He previously held positions at Johns Hopkins University and the University of Maryland, and visiting appointments at Harvard University, the World Bank, and the International Monetary Fund.
