Sino-US Economic Relations and Globalization under the New US Administration

The sixth annual China-US Economists Symposium between the China Finance 40 Forum (CF40) and the Peterson Institute for International Economics (PIIE) took place on May 7, 2017, in Beijing. Under the theme of “Sino-US Economic Relations and Globalization under the New US Administration,” the conferences focused on the impact of Trump’s economic policies on China, international currency cooperation, prospects and challenges of Sino-US trade and investment, and impact of US economic policy adjustment.

PIIE attendees included president Adam S. Posen; senior fellows Jason Furman, Nicholas R. Lardy, Karen Dynan, Jeffrey J. Schott, Jeromin Zettelmeyer, Chad P. Bown, Nicolas Veron; visiting fellow Nathan Sheets; and research analyst Zixuan Huang. A range of high-profile officials, economists, and practitioners also attended, including Vice Minister of Finance Zhu Guangyao, Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) Chen Yuan, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences Senior Research Fellow Yu Yongding, US embassy Beijing Chargé d’affaires David Rank, Head of National Institute of Financial Research Tsinghua University Zhu Min, CF40 Secretary-General Wang Haiming, CF40 Senior Fellow Guan Tao, and others.

In addition to participating in the symposium, the PIIE delegation also visited Chinese policymakers in Beijing. The group met with Vice Premier Wang Yang and other Chinese government offices, including the Central Leading Group for Financial and Economic Affairs, People’s Bank of China, State Administration of Foreign Exchange, China Banking Regulatory Commission, National Development and Reform Commission, and others.
