Event Summary

The Peterson Institute hosted the US release meeting of a new book published by Brussels-based think tank Bruegel, Fragmented Power: Europe and the Global Economy, October 2, 2007. Meeting participants included André Sapir, a senior fellow at Bruegel and former Economic Advisor to the President of the European Commission; Jean Pisani-Ferry, the founding Director of Bruegel and former Chairman of France's Council of Economic Advisors; and Adam Posen, Deputy Director of the Peterson Institute and a leading US researcher on European economic developments. Bruegel, a European think tank devoted to international economics, is a frequent partner with the Peterson Institute and a leader among European economic think tanks.

Fragmented Power: Europe and the Global Economy, edited by Sapir, offers trenchant analyses of eight major international policy areas from a European perspective-including trade, energy, competition policy, financial markets policy, migration, and international financial governance-and recommendations for the European Union to constructively shape globalization in these areas. The intent of the book is to encourage the European Union to look beyond its internal development and put forward an agenda for positive leadership in international economic affairs. Sapir and Pisani-Ferry presented the main conclusions and recommendations of the book and Posen led the general discussion with commentary from a transatlantic perspective.
