Is the Euro Area Crisis Really Over?

Martin Wolf, chief economics commentator of the Financial Times, addressed the topic "Is the Euro Area Crisis Really Over?" followed by discussion with contrasting views from Simeon Djankov, former deputy prime minister and minister of finance of Bulgaria (2009–13), and Jacob Funk Kirkegaard and Adam S. Posen, both of the Peterson Institute for International Economics.

Martin Wolf was awarded the CBE (Commander of the British Empire) in 2000 "for services to financial journalism" and is an associate member of the governing body of Nuffield College, Oxford; honorary fellow of Corpus Christi College, Oxford; and was made a Doctor of Letters, honoris causa, by Nottingham University in July 2006 and a Doctor of Science (Economics), honoris causa, by the London School of Economics in December 2006. Wolf's most recent books are Why Globalization Works and Fixing Global Finance.

Simeon Djankov is rector of the New Economic School in Moscow and an adjunct lecturer in public policy at Harvard Kennedy School. He was an economist on finance and private sector affairs at the World Bank from 1995 until his election in Bulgaria. Djankov received a PhD in economics from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. The Peterson Institute will publish his new book, Inside the Euro Crisis: An Eyewitness Account, in 2014. Jacob Funk Kirkegaard has been associated with PIIE since 2002 and is the coauthor of Transforming the European Economy. He received his PhD from Johns Hopkins University, School of Advanced International Studies, and his RealTime blog posts on the political economy of the euro crisis have attracted a large and global following. Adam S. Posen is president of the Peterson Institute.
