Event Summary

Indonesian Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Mari Elka Pangestu delivered the Peterson Institute's 14th annual Stavros Niarchos Foundation Lecture on April 29, 2014.

Pangestu was appointed to the newly created position of minister of tourism and creative economy in October 2011. She previously served as minister of trade of Indonesia from October 2004 to October 2011. Before that, she was a member of the governing board at the Centre for Strategic and International Studies in Jakarta and has long been a leader in various international trade forums. She has also served as an external lecturer in the faculty of economics at the University of Indonesia. Pangestu obtained her bachelor's and master's degrees from the Australian National University and her doctorate in economics from the University of California at Davis.

The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Lecture has been presented at the Institute in previous years by such noted economists turned global policymakers as Alan Greenspan, Mario Monti, Larry Summers, Jean-Claude Trichet, Long Yongtu, and Ernesto Zedillo.
