Ten years ago, the European Central Bank (ECB) took over licensing of all banks in the euro area and direct supervision of the larger ones. Its supervisory practice is now evolving on the basis of accumulated experience and emerging challenges. The ECB is updating its supervisory review and evaluation process with the aim of further increasing its supervisory effectiveness.
