Michael Mussa cared immensely for the International Monetary Fund and fought hard to ensure its independence from individual shareholders' interests. He combined clear thinking, eloquence, and ready wit with amazing effectiveness. To me and many of his staff who worked closely with him, he was the kindest man who made us laugh constantly and who defended his staff fiercely. His presence is still felt amongst us during policy and country discussions.
