Sources: Sino-NK’s Shigak

Body

This blog is always interested in new sources of information, and so we were intrigued by a new effort by our friends at Sino-NK to collect and analyze data on South Korea. The project, called "Shigak" (시각) is a multilingual data collection effort that uses Twitter to curate sources on key political, social, and economic developments in South Korea. Each bimonthly issue takes the most important tweets posted by Sino-NK analysts under the hashtag #시각 and augments them with brief analysis.

The latest issue of Shigak for example (located at this link), recaps the coverage of the Sewol (our analysis can be found here). In addition to reports on the Sewol, the Shigak project picks up those interesting granular stories that it is easy to miss in the English-language press. For example: China has announced it will be construct a memorial to Korea’s anti-Japanese fighters at Xian; after being acquitted of charges of espionage, purported North Korean spy Yoo Woo-sung is now facing indictment for illegal financial transactions; the mainstream progressive party, the New Politics Alliance for Democracy has broken precedent and come out in support a North Korean human rights bill.

Shigak is edited by Managing Editor Steven Denney and Co-Editor Christopher Green. Back issues and information on following Shigak can be found here.
