A Recap of This Week’s Events

For those of you not able to make the two excellent events on North Korea at Brookings earlier this week, we offer a recap and links here.

First, C-SPAN has provided video coverage of Monday's Human Rights in North Korea: An Address by Michael Kirby, in which Justice Kirby presents the findings and recommendations of the Commission of Inquiry on North Korea. Justice Kirby’s address begins at around 4:40, and Marcus Noland’s commentary starts at 42:20.

Tuesday’s well-attended event on Illicit Economic Activities of the North Korean Government is available as an audio stream. Dr. Greitens presents an overview of her work beginning at 3:45, and Marcus Noland provides his commentary at around 37:05. News outlets have predictably highlighted the more sensational aspects of her research, but reading through the full report (.pdf here) provides a thoughtful and comprehensive view on how North Korea’s illicit operations – along with the role of the state -- have markedly shifted over time, and what it means for US policy going forward.
