“It's a shame that North Koreans are treated by their rulers as basically being an expendable race of people; before we were allowed on the ride, the cadres in charge sent a few terrified farmers on test runs like a shipment of human flour sacks.”—Alex Hoban, "Hoping No One Dies at the North Korean Fun Fair!"

Maybe someone in North Korea read Hoban’s muckraking North Korean amusement park expose, because according to KCNA, Kim Jong-un, seen above offering on-the-spot guidance, has gone on the warpath to clean up North Korea’s hazardous amusement parks. According to press reports, he "scolded" officials for having a "below-zero spirit of serving the people" after he noticed a damaged path in front of a Viking ride and called it "pathetic," while also pointing out flaws in the park's garden and a roller-coaster, the condition of paint on rides, and the safety of the water park. One South Korean researcher speculated that the initiative “could serve other purposes, such as proving Kim's ability to look after detailed aspects of policy, or blaming government officials for the people's frustrations.” No, we’re not making this up.
Happy Mother's Day.
