A post that requires virtually no commentary: KCNA announced today in a blow against Japanese imperialists, beginning on 15 August, it would establish “Pyongyang time” setting its clocks back by 30 minutes, to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the end of Japanese colonial rule. This move reverses a change to Korean Standard Time made in 1912 by the Japanese. Or as KCNA put it,
“The wicked Japanese imperialists committed such unpardonable crimes as depriving Korea of even its standard time while mercilessly trampling down its land with 5 000 year-long history and culture and pursuing the unheard-of policy of obliterating the Korean nation.
It is the firm faith and will of the DPRK's service personnel and people to force the Japanese imperialists to pay for the monstrous crimes committed by them for a century, firmly defend the national sovereignty and demonstrate for eternity the dignity and might of the great Paektusan nation shining with the immortal august names of Kim Il Sung and leader Kim Jong Il.”
According to Yonhap, “The time difference could cause some logistical problems, such as the timetables at their jointly run industrial park in the North Korean city of Kaesong.
South Korea has also pursued similar attempts to reset the standard time, with massive social and economic costs getting in the way. Potential confusion expected in joint military operations between Seoul and Washington has also been one of the stumbling blocks.”
