Jaehoon Ahn, 1941-2011

Today the Washington Post published the obituary of my friend Jaehoon Ahn who died 1 June after a sudden illness.  Jae was a fine journalist and even a better man. If you want to get a sense of who he was, I can think of no better place to start than an essay he wrote for his former employer, the Post, on Father's Day four years ago. I remember visiting him in his office one day and Jae excitedly showing me the jar of soil from his native Pyongyang that is mentioned in his essay. Sadly, he never made it back there himself.

Jae is survived by his wife for 42 years, Soon Hoon, and daughters, Soomie Lee Ahn of Manila and Yoomie Lee Ahn of Richmond; four sisters; a brother; and three grandchildren. Soon Hoon has asked that in lieu of flowers, donations to the Committee on Human Rights in North Korea where we both served on the Board would be preferred.  A memorial service is scheduled for 25 June here in Washington.
