"Hunger Is Humiliation": Joseph Kim TED Talk

Date

Body

Following on the moving TED talk by Hyeonseo Lee, we now have a second entry from Joseph Kim. Kim was four years old when the famine hit in 1994, and his remarks start with the depredation of the man-made famine; his simple observation that “hunger is humiliation” struck us as deeply true. The story is well-known: the struggle to survive; the decision to leave; the uncertainty of life in China; the adjustments in the US. As always, memories of family and the abiding sense of loss and separation run through the talk. But there is no substitute for hearing the story first hand, and the call for help that refugees typically bring.
