Congrats on that H-bomb

This blog takes the policy issues seriously (recent posts on North Korea's fourth nuclear test below) but sometimes we really do have to sit back and laugh at some of the crazy out there. Yesterday’s “slave to the blog” wrap-up brought us tales of predictably base North Korean propaganda falling from the heavens down to South Korea and the invention of indigenously produced hangover-free North Korean booze. It turns out Americans (and foreign tourists on the streets of Hollywood) provide us with fodder for face-palm inducing laughter sad tears too (especially?). In the Jimmy Kimmel clip below an interviewer solicits congratulatory remarks from passersby for Kim Jong Un on the event of his achieving his dreams vis-à-vis developing an H-bomb.

It turns out if you load a question with a certain degree of sprightliness—even if its about Kim Jong Un detonating an H-bomb—you'll eventually get the results you want. We’re not sure, but there might be implications for social science research here.

“You know I think that, you know I think if you do believe that one day, you can, dreams can come true I think. It’s definitely a Disney, you know, thing to do.”
