PIIE's Steven Fries named to UK Climate Change Committee

The Peterson Institute for International Economics (PIIE) is proud to announce that Nonresident Senior Fellow Steven Fries has been appointed as a member of the UK Climate Change Committee.

An independent, statutory body established by the UK's Climate Change Act 2008, the committee advises the country on emission targets and reports to Parliament on progress made in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and preparing for climate change impacts.

Fries was appointed on July 6 by government ministers, following a competitive process, for a five-year term.

Fries has been a PIIE senior fellow since March 2022 and is also a distinguished economist at the Institute for New Economic Thinking at the Oxford Martin School. He specializes in the economics of transforming energy systems, with expertise in the economics of energy, climate change, and sustainable finance.

He previously was chief economist at the UK Department of Energy and Climate Change and group chief economist at Shell. His earlier career also included several senior roles at the European Bank for Reconstruction.
