Event Summary

Leszek Balcerowicz, former Chairman of the National Bank of Poland and former Minister of Finance of Poland, spoke at the Peterson Institute on February 22, 2008 on the topic of the new Polish government's ability to complete market economic reforms. The event was cosponsored with the Center for European Policy Analysis (CEPA), where Professor Balcerowicz is currently a distinguished fellow.

Poland was the pioneer of post-communist economic transformation. In recent years, the success of its market reforms has been somewhat cloudy. At the end of 2007, however, the new government under Prime Minister Donald Tusk aimed at reinforcing Poland's market economic success with more deregulation, privatization and sounder fiscal policies.
