Event Summary
Agustín Carstens, Governor of the Central Bank of Mexico and a candidate to become Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, spoke at the Peterson Institute on June 13, 2011, while in Washington as part of his consultations concerning the IMF position. He addressed the topic of "Why the World Needs an Effective and Independent IMF."
Dr. Carstens became Governor of the Banco de México in January 2010. He was formerly minister of finance from 2006 to 2009. Dr. Carstens was Deputy Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, responsible for handling the IMF's relationship with nearly seventy member countries, from 2000 to 2003. He had previously served as Executive Director at the Fund representing the constituency including Mexico (along with Spain and Venezuela). He received his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago under the direction of our Senior Fellow Michael Mussa, who was Economic Counselor and Director of the Department of Research at the IMF from 1991 until joining the Institute in 2001, and who will chair the luncheon meeting in my absence.
