Event Summary

The Peterson Institute for International Economics, in collaboration with Chatham House and the Emerson Collective, will hold the third session of "The Way Forward," an initiative hosted by The Atlantic, on May 14 at 1:00 pm ET.

As the COVID-19 crisis overshadows what was due to be a milestone year for climate action, the post-pandemic economic recovery will involve trade-offs between short-term national and industrial interests and longer-term investment to support the transition to lower carbon economies. In the session, a diverse group of experts will assess what the current global health crisis means for efforts to reduce carbon emissions to net zero by 2050; the prospects for an equitable, green transformation of our economy; and the resolve of governments and industries to take action on climate change.

This on-the-record discussion will be moderated by Ron Brownstein, senior editor of The Atlantic.

Confirmed speakers include:

• Christiana Figueres, Founding Partner, Global Optimism, and former Executive Secretary, United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change
• Hal Harvey, CEO, Energy Innovation
• Ernest Moniz, CEO, Nuclear Threat Initiative, and former United States Secretary of Energy
• Mary Robinson, Former President of Ireland and Chair of The Elders
