Event Summary

The Peterson Institute for International Economics, in collaboration with Chatham House and the Emerson Collective, will hold the fourth session of "The Way Forward," an initiative hosted by The Atlantic, on May 19 at 1:00 pm ET. Experts will discuss the future of democracy.

Recent government efforts to contain the spread of COVID-19 have threatened to constrain fundamental rights and freedoms across many liberal democracies. During this session, a diverse group of experts will assess how these efforts may shape democratic norms and institutions for years to come; what lessons can be drawn from previous global emergencies about the durability of democratic institutions; and what we might do now to sustain and strengthen democratic systems for future emergencies.

This on-the-record discussion will be moderated by The Atlantic.

Confirmed speakers include:

• Anne Applebaum, Staff Writer, The Atlantic
• The Right Honorable Tony Blair, Executive Chairman, Institute for Global Change, and former Prime Minister of Great Britain and Northern Ireland
• Martha Minow, 300th Anniversary University Professor, Harvard University
• Yascha Mounk, Contributing Writer, The Atlantic
