Event Summary
Richard L. Trumka, president of the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO), discussed US trade policy at the Peterson Institute on March 18, 2015. Trumka presented his view of the relationship between the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) and US-China economic strategy. President Obama and USTR Michael Froman have argued that without TPP, China will "set the rules" for Asia and the global economy. The AFL-CIO holds a different perspective, making for an engaging and critical contribution to the public debate.
Trumka has been president of the AFL-CIO since 2009. He served as secretary-treasurer of the AFL-CIO from 1995 to 2009. Prior to joining the AFL-CIO, he was president of the United Mine Workers from 1982 to 1995.
