Brainard was confirmed as undersecretary for international affairs on April 20. She had most recently served as vice president and founding director of the global economy and development program at the Brookings Institution and had earlier been an associate professor of applied economics at the Sloan School of Management at MIT. She was previously deputy national economic advisor and deputy assistant to the President on international economics during the Clinton administration, when she also served as the US sherpa to the G-8.
