Jaitley was appointed as minister of finance under Prime Minister Narendra Modi in May 2014. He is a senior advocate in the supreme court and a former additional solicitor general of India. He served as leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the Rajya Sabha (upper chamber of the Indian parliament) during 2009–14. He was also a member of the board of governors of the Asian Development Bank.
