Event Summary

Michael Mandelbaum, professor of American Foreign Policy at the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies, discussed his new book, The Road to Global Prosperity, on July 17, 2014, at the Peterson Institute for International Economics. The Institute's expert on transition economics, Russia, and Eastern Europe, Anders Åslund, provided commentary.

The Road to Global Prosperity examines the political fault lines on which the global economy rests. It assesses the sturdiness of the political framework that supports international economic activity, analyzes the domestic political backlash against trade, investment, and immigration, and describes the chief political obstacles to economic growth in Brazil, Russia, India, and China. The book concludes that, while the global economy will face major challenges in the years ahead, there are powerful reasons to believe that globalization will continue to proceed, and therefore make the world richer.

Michael Mandelbaum is the Christian A. Herter Professor of American Foreign Policy at the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies. He has also taught at Harvard and Columbia Universities and at the United States Naval Academy. Mandelbaum served for 23 years as the associate director of the Aspen Institute Congressional Project on American Relations with Europe and the Former Communist World. Professor Mandelbaum is a graduate of Yale College, and he earned his master's degree at King's College, Cambridge University, and his doctorate at Harvard University.
