Event Summary
The COVID-19 pandemic has revealed and worsened many historic economic challenges, compounded by the growing retreat from international cooperation and slowing growth rates. The Peterson Institute is launching a new series, Rebuilding the Global Economy, to lay out for policymakers heading into 2021 what needs to be repaired by defining critical and practical priorities, and offering credible solutions.
These PIIE-led proposals and dialogues will be rolled out through the end of 2020, culminating in the release of a major comprehensive policy program in January 2021. They will take the form of memoranda to policymakers and policy briefs, accompanied by data visualizations, blogs, videos, and virtual events with experts, edited and moderated by Adam S. Posen, president of PIIE.
The virtual discussions will outline a multi-faceted set of policy responses to achieve sustainable, inclusive economic growth and improve human welfare. This discussion focused on the role of the White House featuring policy memos advising:
- Director of the National Economic Council by Jason Furman, former chair of the White House Council of Economic Advisers, professor of the practice of economic policy at Harvard University, and PIIE nonresident senior fellow
- Chair of the Council of Economic Advisers by Karen Dynan, former US Treasury Department chief economist, professor of the practice in the Harvard University, and PIIE nonresident senior fellow
- Director of the National Trade Council/Office of Trade and Manufacturing Policy by Douglas Irwin, John French Professor of Economics at Dartmouth College and PIIE nonresident senior fellow
- Chair of US Delegation for Bilateral Economic Talks with China by Nicholas R. Lardy, PIIE Anthony M. Solomon Senior Fellow
