Event Summary
Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras delivered the speech "The New Greece: A Stability Asset in the Eastern Mediterranean" on October 1, 2013, as a special fall edition of the Institute's annual Stavros Niarchos Foundation Lecture series. Peter G. Peterson, chairman of the PIIE Board of Directors, chaired the event.
Antonis Samaras became the prime minister of Greece in June 2012. Samaras had served previously as minister of culture in 2009, minister of foreign affairs for two successive governments from 1989 to 1992, and minister of finance in 1989. In November 2009, he was elected the seventh president of the New Democracy party. He holds degrees in economics and business administration from Amherst College and Harvard University.
The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Lecture has been presented at the Institute in previous years by such luminaries of combined economic policy leadership and analysis as Alan Greenspan, Mario Monti, Larry Summers, Jean-Claude Trichet and Ernesto Zedillo.
