Event Summary
Alexei L. Kudrin, deputy prime minister and minister of finance of the Russian Federation, spoke on the topic of "Russian Economic Policy in the Midst of the Global Financial Crisis" at an event held at the Institute on April 24, 2009.
Russia has enjoyed a steady average growth of 7 percent a year during Mr. Kudrin's time as minister of finance, and he has delivered a budget surplus every year until now. On March 19, the Russian government adopted a new budget with a substantial deficit and a new anti-crisis program to counter the global financial crisis, which has hit Russia hard.
At this event, the Institute and the Center for Strategic and International Studies also launched their new book The Russia Balance Sheet, authored by senior fellow Anders Åslund and Andrew Kuchins, director of the Russia and Eurasia Program at CSIS. The Russia Balance Sheet is the first book produced by a major three-year project at the two institutions, also called the Russia Balance Sheet. The book is a factual and analytical account of the state of Russia and emulates the much-acclaimed China Balance Sheet book and project of 2006–08.
