Event Summary

Dominique Strauss-Kahn, managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), spoke at the Peterson Institute on June 29, 2010, and discussed how the recent turmoil in the global economy calls for a more effective IMF to tackle new challenges facing its members. Building on recent proposals within and outside the Fund, the event focused on reforms that are needed to update its mandate in a transformed world economy. Strauss-Kahn presented new reform ideas with the purpose of obtaining responses and input from key stakeholders in the future role of the IMF.

Prior to assuming leadership of the IMF in 2007, Mr. Strauss-Kahn was a member of the French National Assembly and professor of economics at the Institut d'Etudes Politiques de Paris. Earlier in his career, he served as minister of economy, finance, and industry and as minister of industry and trade of France. He helped manage the launch of the euro and participated in the Uruguay Round of trade.
