Event Summary
The Peterson Institute for International Economics (PIIE), in partnership with the World Bank Group, will host a discussion entitled "Global Value Chains, Megaregionals, and Prospects for Multilateral Trade Cooperation," on November 3, 2014. PIIE Senior Fellow Jeffrey J. Schott and Patrick Low, vice president of research at the Fung Global Institute in Hong Kong, will make presentations on the topic. Anabel Gonzalez, senior director of trade and competitiveness at the World Bank Group, and PIIE Senior Fellow Gary Clyde Hufbauer will provide commentary.
Jeffrey J. Schott has been a senior fellow at the Institute since 1983. He has been a visiting lecturer at Princeton University and adjunct professor at Georgetown University. He has served as a member of the Trade and Environment Policy Advisory Committee of the US Government since 2003. He has also served as a member of the Advisory Committee on International Economic Policy of the US Department of State.
Before becoming the vice president of research with the Fung Global Institute, Patrick Low was the chief economist at the World Trade Organization since its inception in 1995. He briefly served as the WTO Director-General's Chief of Staff from 1999 to 2000 before returning to his position as chief economist. He has taught at El Colegio de Mexico, as well as at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies.
Anabel Gonzalez has been the senior director of the World Bank Group Trade and Competitiveness Global Practice since July 2014. Previously, she served as Costa Rica's minister of foreign trade and the president's principal advisor, negotiator, and spokesperson on trade and investment policy. She has also served in Costa Rica as director general for international trade negotiations, vice-minister of foreign trade, as well as director of the agriculture and commodities division of the World Trade Organization.
Gary Clyde Hufbauer has been a senior fellow at the Institute since 1992. He served as the Maurice Greenberg Chair and Director of Studies at the Council on Foreign Relations during 1996–98. He was also the Marcus Wallenberg Professor of International Financial Diplomacy at Georgetown University during 1985–92, and deputy director of the International Law Institute during 1979–81.
