Event Summary
Il SaKong, Chairman of the Korean Presidential Committee for the G-20 summit, outlined his government's proposed action program for the upcoming G-20 summit in Seoul in November. SaKong also reviewed the results from the G-20 summit in Toronto, which he attended.
SaKong was senior secretary for economic affairs to the president of Korea during 1983–87 and minister of finance in 1987–88. He is now chairman and CEO of the Korea International Trade Association (KITA) as well as President Lee Myung-bak's special representative for G-20 preparation. He was special economic advisor to the President and chairman of the presidential council on national competitiveness from the outset of President Lee's administration. He chaired the ASEM Vision Group in 1998–99 and the Emerging Markets Eminent Persons Group for reforming the international financial architecture in 2000–2001. SaKong was a visiting fellow at the Institute in 1991–92, during which time he wrote Korea in the World Economy published by the Institute in 1993.
