Event Summary

Greg Ip, US economics editor for the Economist, presented the Economist's 2013 global economy survey at the Peterson Institute on October 16, 2013. Peterson Institute Senior Fellows Joseph E. Gagnon and Arvind Subramanian offered their own analysis following Ip's presentation.

The Economist publishes a special report on the world economy each October in connection with the IMF/WB annual meetings. This year's theme is the development of globalization after the global financial crisis. In the survey, Ip argues that since 2008 unfettered globalization has given way to "gated globalization"—countries and policymakers increasingly want to manage how they interact with the global economy, whether through selective capital controls, regional trade agreements, or murky forms of protectionism.
