Agustín Carstens, general manager of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS), delivered remarks on the next steps for central bank digital currencies (CBDC). He spoke about how CBDCs could work in practice and what they would mean for users, financial institutions, and the international monetary system. PIIE president Adam S. Posen moderated the Q&A and discussion.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Dr. Carstens has been the general manager of the BIS since December 2017. He was previously the governor of the Bank of Mexico from 2010 to 2017, a member of the BIS Board from 2011 to 2017, and the chair of the International Monetary and Financial Committee, the International Monetary Fund's policy advisory committee, from 2015 to 2017.
