Professor Yu Yongding, senior fellow at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), delivered the Peterson Institute's eleventh Whitman Lecture, "Chinese Financial Development and Liberalization," on September 29, 2015. He shared his views on China's current financial turbulence and future development.
Yu is a senior fellow at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) in Beijing. He served as president of the China Society of World Economics during 2003–11, and was director of the Institute of World Economics and Politics at CASS during 1998–2009. He also served on the Monetary Policy Committee of the People's Bank of China (PBC) from 2004 to 2006. He was a member of the Advisory Committee of National Planning of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) of the People's Republic of China for the eleventh five-year plan. Currently he is a member of the Expert Committee of National Planning of the Commission of NDRC of the PBC (thirteenth five-year plan).
The annual Whitman Lecture series arises from the generosity and the vision of Marina and Robert Whitman. Marina v.N. Whitman is professor of Business Administration and Public Policy at the University of Michigan. She formerly served as vice president and group executive for public affairs at General Motors, as a member of the Council of Economic Advisers and as Distinguished Public Service Professor of Economics at the University of Pittsburgh. She has been a member of the Institute's Board of Directors for many years. Robert Whitman is Professor Emeritus of English Literature at the University of Pittsburgh. The previous Whitman Lectures have been presented by global economic leaders including Mohamed El-Erian, Joaquín Almunia, Ross Garnaut, Noboru Hatakeyama, Otmar Issing, Mario Monti, and Dambisa Moyo.
