Event Summary
Dr. Agustín Carstens, governor of the Bank of Mexico and newly elected chairman of the International Monetary and Financial Committee (IMFC), delivered the Institute’s 15th annual Stavros Niarchos Foundation Lecture on April 20, 2015.
The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Lecture has been presented at the Institute in previous years by such noted economists turned global policymakers as Alan Greenspan, Mario Monti, Lawrence Summers, Jean-Claude Trichet, Long Yongtu, and Ernesto Zedillo. This annual event is made possible by the ongoing generous support of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation. It is the Institute's signature occasion among many outstanding programs.
Carstens has been the governor at the Bank of Mexico since January 2010. In February 2015, he was selected by the members of the IMFC, the policy advisory committee of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), as chairman of the committee for a term of three years, effective March 23, 2015. From December 2006 until December 2009, Carstens was the minister of finance of Mexico. While serving as minister of finance, he also chaired the IMF and World Bank Joint Development Committee from March 2007 to October 2009. Carstens is universally recognized as one of the leading central bankers and emerging-market economic statesmen of our time.
