Event Summary

The Peterson Institute hosted an event September 28, 2012, to present the reform proposals for the euro area made by the Institute for New Economic Thinking (INET) Council on the Euro Zone Crisis. The Council is a nonpartisan group of leading economists from throughout the euro area that has already had a major impact on the European debate. PIIE Senior Fellow Adam Posen is a member of the Council's Advisors.

Dr. Luis Garicano, a leading member of the Council and professor of economics and strategy at the London School of Economics (LSE), spoke on "Breaking the Deadlock: A Path Out of the Crisis." The Institute's C. Fred Bergsten, William R. Cline, and Nicolas Véron followed with a discussion of the Council's assessment of and proposals for the European challenges.

Before joining LSE, Professor Garicano taught at the University of Chicago's Booth School of Business from 1998 to 2008 and has been a visiting professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and London Business School. He is known worldwide for his research on industrial organization and labor markets and is a prominent voice for structural reform in his native Spain.
