Event Summary
The Peterson Institute for International Economics hosted a meeting in honor of Fabrizio Saccomanni, Director General of the Bank of Italy, on December 11, 2008. Saccomanni presented his new book, Managing International Financial Stability: National Tamers versus Global Tigers, and offered his views on the current financial crisis from his inside perspective in the Financial Stability Forum and G-20 discussions.
About the Speaker
Fabrizio Saccomanni is a member of the directorate of the Bank of Italy and of the board of directors of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS). He has represented the Bank of Italy in international financial institutions as a member of various key committees at the European Central Bank, BIS, and the European Union. He was chairman of the Foreign Exchange Policy Subcommittee at the European Monetary Institute (1991–97) prior to the creation of the euro. He participated in the negotiations for the creation of the European Economic and Monetary Union and in the activities of the Euro Committee set up by the Italian Government to manage the changeover to the single currency (1998–2002). He worked at the International Monetary Fund for five years and was vice president of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (February 2003 to September 2006). He is a member of the advisory committee of the Institute.
